I have no interest in completely redecorating my house for every season, but I do love to embrace the seasons by making some little swaps to get our house ready for the season we're heading into. For me, a lot of this is how the house feels, not just how it looks. I think a lot about all five senses when it comes to seasonal decorating. Here are 5 things I’m doing this year to get our home ready for fall: 1. Give the front porch a little refreshIt really doesn’t take much to make the front porch feel more seasonal, and mine really needs some sprucing up this year. I got a gorgeous new wreath for our front door and put out a new welcome mat (Hobby Lobby has cheap ones!). I also ordered some faux mums to try out in a planter by the front door because I’m kind of over spending a bunch of money on real mums every year. 2. Make the house smell like fallOne of my favorite ways to make the seasons feel different is simply changing up the scents around the house. I’m pulling out some of our more fall-y and masculine candles and swapping the fragrances in the Pura diffusers we have around the house. It’s one of those little changes that takes almost no time but makes the whole house feel different. 3. Do a little outdoor cleanupBefore the weather gets too cold here in the Midwest, I’m trying to knock out some of those outdoor chores that are easy to put off. Sweeping down cobwebs from the porch, washing windows (I use a spray like this), cleaning up flower beds and generally giving everything a little tidy-up. I don’t need to pack up all of our outdoor toys and furniture quite yet, but things like the water table and water toys have definitely reached the end of their season. Getting a head start on those little things now means there’s less to do when cold weather shows up. 4. Pick a couple of deep-cleaning projectsI don’t do a giant fall deep clean. Instead, I like to pick a couple of things that I normally don’t get around to and just tackle those. My big project this year is cleaning out the garage so we can actually park in there when winter comes.🙃 But it could also be things like wiping down baseboards, touching up paint, cleaning out a cabinet or finally reorganizing that one space you’ve been ignoring. You don’t have to deep clean your entire house to make it feel fresh Pick a few things and call it good. 5. Swap out the faux floralsThis is probably one of my favorite little seasonal decorating tricks because it doesn’t require buying a bunch of new decor. I have vases around the house that I really like, so instead of layering a whole bunch of new seasonal stuff on top of what’s already there (and making everything feel too cluttered), I mostly just switch out the floral stems. (Michael's is my favorite place to find affordable ones and I like seeing them in person.) I’ll pack away the brighter, more summery stems and replace them with fall florals. I might also shuffle the vases and some decor around to different spots in the house, and I'll sprinkle in a few pumpkins here and there. I also have a love for Geometry tea towels and like to bring out ones with fall vibes this time of year (I'll pack away the brightly colored ones in my Easter bin so I remember to get them back out come spring). Last week was our first week of school and we were all wiped out by the weekend. Don't you think the school year should always start midweek? It was a lot to jump straight into a full five days of school! One thing I've learned is to not make any plans the first weekend after school starts, and I'm so glad I protected that time because we all needed a couple of quiet days at home. Are your kids back in school yet? -Emily What I'm organizing Well, when it came time to renovate our basement we...
There are so many things that seem to come along with “back to school” these days. New wardrobes. New backpacks. Elaborate first-day photos. Meal prep. Lunch packing. Special breakfasts. A perfectly organized homework station. A whole new morning routine. And if those things make your life easier or you truly enjoy doing them, go for it! But I also think sometimes we need a reminder that just because something is popular on the internet doesn't mean it's something we actually need to do....
It's completely wild to me that we're in August already, but here we are! Welcome back to The Good Stuff, a monthly roundup of the things we loved most this month. After a very busy July, I am looking forward to having a little more time this month to make a dent in the massive amount of stuff we have piled in our garage. When construction was starting on our basement renovation, we hauled everything up the stairs and out to the garage to deal with later. Well, "later" is here and it's time...
